In Memory

Leon King

Leon King was a cheerful, easy-going classmate at DHS.  He lived and worked in Pietermaritzburg for a while after leaving school but spent most of his life in Durban, where he eventually owned and operated a hardware shop. Unfortunately Leon came to suffer from alcoholism.  His marriage to Lynn ended in divorce about 1995. Leon died from liver disease on 3rd December 2010. He leaves a son, Christopher, and a daugher, Tracy. Please see classmates' words about Leon below.

I was a casual friend of Leon at DHS, but got to know him better in the 'seventies, when he & I lived in Pmb.  Vic King (no relation to Leon), of King's Sports, was the Chairman of the DHSOB Club, Pmb. Branch, for many years.  I served on the committee under Vic & Leon.  When Vic stood down, Leon took over as Chairman & ran the Branch very efficiently for several years.  He was a smiling, happy bloke, whom everybody liked, & was thus an ideal person to run the Pmb. Branch.

Leon organised cocktail parties & other get-togethers at The Capital Towers Hotel, which was owned by Theo Fienberg, another DHSOB.  Theo generously allowed us to use The Pearl Room for our big functions & smaller venues for our committee meetings, all gratis.

I later lost touch with Leon & am very sorry to hear that he has passed away.  A good person...may he Rest in Peace.
