Brian Graham Vickers
10 October 1944 – 23 April 2009
Brian came to DHS from Penzance Primary, and after matric, obtained a degree in Electrical Engineering at Natal University (Durban). He had a lifelong love for sailing, taking part in the 1973 Cape to Rio race on Mainstay, and remained a member of Point Yacht Club (Durban) and Victoria Lake Yacht Club (Gauteng) all his life.
After graduating, Brian worked in Durban, and lectured part-time at Durban Varsity, moving to Jo’burg in 1976. He was married to Barbara, and was divorced in 1978.
Brian worked for the Altech Group, leaving to join NCR in 1982. He spent about three years in Namibia for NCR, leaving them in1996 to join Global Investments. He retired in February 2008.
Brian spent his spare time traveling extensively, mainly in S. E. Asia.
Brian passed away in Jo’burg after a short illness on23 April 2009. He is survived by his daughter, Perla (15), who lives in Phuket Thailand.
On a personal note, I will always remember with deep gratitude Brian's kindness and support when my eldest daughter was severely injured in an accident in Jo'burg.
Brian’s close friend John Green, who provided much of the above information wrote:
“His daughter Perla was born on 25/1/1995 in Phuket Thailand. Brian was an astute guy, and has catered well for her, her education and future through a Trust. I will be going to Thailand in November 2010 to scatter Brian’s ashes with her and her family at Patong, Beach, a favourite spot of his. A minister to say a few words, and then a few beers to wish him on his way”.
May he rest in peace.
