Godfrey Shev was somewhat reserved classmate, but genial to those who got to know him.  He studied industriously and did well academically, spending his final two years at DHS in the newly created Advanced Maths classes.  Here he is seen sitting his final matric exams, at centre in this enlarged photo that was pubished in the Daily News:

Godfrey was intent on a career in accounting. From 1962-1965 he studied part-time for his CTA qualification at the University of Natal, while serving articles in an accountant's office.  He must have impressed his superiors, because once qualified he was hired as a part-time teacher at both the University and the Durban Tech. He held these positions until 1970, after which he devoted all his time to his profession.

In the early 1970s Godfrey left Durban and settled in Cape Town.  There he joined an accountancy firm and from 1976-1980 undertook further part-time study for an Advanced Diploma in Taxation at the University of Cape Town.  Some years later, from 1991-1993, he studied part-time for a Master of Laws degree at the University, specializing in commercial law and taxation.

Godfrey married Michelle Miller in 1969 and they had three daughters, Hayley, Mandy, and Joanne.

Godfrey's reputation and his client list grew apace, and in 2002 he set up his own firm, Godfrey Shev and Associates.

Godfrey was also a member of the DHS Class of 1960, and attended one of their reunions in Cape Town in 2013.  He he is with Michelle:

Over the years, Godfrey came to be regarded as one of South Africa's leading experts on taxation. He published academic articles on tax policy and attracted corporate clients.  His connections opened more opportunities for him and he entered other fields of enterprise and investment. He became a director of more than twenty companies and held many different corporate positions, ranging from Chief Financial Officer of the 5-star Pepper Club Hotel in Cape Town, to Chief Financial Officer of Solomon Brothers Property Holdings. 

In reviewing his career, Godfrey wrote:  "Worked hard, gained an education, supported a wife and three children and it appears that it never ends but the pleasure the grand children provide is what it is all about. Maybe the day will come when I find a good reason to retire from day to day business which is generally just too exciting."

Godfrey Shev passed away in Cape Town on 11 August 2025.  He is survived by Michelle, his wife of 58 years; his daughters Hayley, Mandy, and Joanne and their families, including his grandchildren Gabriella, Alyssa, and Jordan.
