In Memory

Horace Margetts

Horace Margetts was born in 1942, so he was two years older that most of the Class of 1961.  He was with us in 1958 and 1959, but did not complete his JC exams in 1959 and probably left the school that year when he turned 16.

Horace is remembered for his commanding presence (he was usually the tallest in any group) and his calm, deliberative demeanour. Despite the incongruous blond hair, he was noted at school for his impressive Elvis Presley impersonations.

Horace married Cynthia Land in 1970.  They were divorced thirty years later, in 2000.

Horace lived in Durban, where he worked as a general contractor.

Horace passed away in May 2010.  He was survived by his son, also named Horace.

I have vivid memories of being persuaded very much against my instincts to perform with Horace in our third form talent contest (organised by Mr McMillan, if you recall) while he entertained the audience with renditions of a few Elvis songs.  Quite what my part was is now a little foggy, though it was no doubt largely redundant, but I do remember being very impressed by Horace's expert miming of both the words and the gyrations.  He was certainly a character.
